Neelam Ahooja Gill

Toronto-based Neelam Ahooja Gill is a content creator of the rarest form: she started making videos for Tiktok and Instagram at 50, with decades of personal style cultivation already under her belt. And speaking of belts, Neelam’s collector-worthy pieces form the core of her sophisticated yet playful sensibility. She is a true storyteller, and it’s a pleasure to hear her talk about clothes, shoes and all the high quality details that make something timeless.

In 2020, after a career in finance and raising two children alongside her husband, Neelam decided to share her philosophy on the art of dressing, and quickly found an audience that was hungry for her thoughtful and inspiring style wisdom. Soon, she was making content full-time. Neelam’s try-ons and test-drives are not just about documenting outfits, but delving into the craft, texture, cut and versatility of her pieces.

How would you describe your style?

Undone, understated, and boyish.  My curls are as integral to my style as any other element and they’re wild and untamed and rather than battle them, I’ve learned it’s best to honour them and work with pieces that allow them to shine, so I gravitate towards looks that feel just a bit “off”.

What albums or songs are you listening to at the moment ?

I’ve spent many hours weeping to The Cure’s latest album, Songs of a Lost World, and Endsong is one of my favourite tracks.  Robert Smith got me through the 80s and hearing his voice is like coming home.

What is currently inspiring you? Sartorially, culturally or otherwise?

Staying offline and spending time alone in thought, and in my closet.  I’m pulling pieces from the back and reviving them - vintage Dries Van Noten, old Row. I appreciate individuality and there’s nothing like finding something you’d forgotten about and falling in love all over again.

What is your current favorite shoe from Emme Parsons, and how do you style it?

The Stretch Boots.  My neuromas make my toes cramp and while I like pointy shoes and boots, I wasn’t able to wear them, until I met these – and they work with everything.  They’re a comfortable height, the leather is luxuriously soft and has a subtle sheen, and I love that it zips at the back.  And that stitching on the front seam is a beautiful detail.

What made you decide to shift careers?

I didn’t launch this career with intention. I left finance (I’m a retired Chartered Accountant) shortly after I had my first child and I never returned. I’ve always loved fashion but being the daughter of immigrant parents (who worried about my future and wanted me to choose a secure path), I was discouraged from entering the arts. I waited for my kids to mature before I took my attention away from them, but I’d casually post outfits on Instagram, and then posted more consistently during the pandemic (late 2020), and my life changed, seemingly overnight.  Unknowingly, I’d found a niche space –  no one was reviewing The Row in detail.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received and why?

I’ll share two:

There will always be someone who can’t see your worth. Don’t let it be you.

The only thing that matters at any moment is the person sitting with you and how you make them feel when they’re with you.

Favorite gift to give?

Hand-written cards with a gift card (see below)

Favorite gift to receive.  Hand-written cards with a gift card.  It’s basically a love note that comes with a license to spend and because I’m particular, I’m not the easiest to buy for, so this is their only option (and it makes me super happy).
